A Welcome from the Club President

Hello everyone,

My name is Jeff Baker, and it’s my great honour to serve as the President of Woodcroft Bowls Club.

About me, and Discovering Lawn Bowls.

When I retired in 2017, I knew I needed a way to stay socially connected—something I deeply valued during my working years. I set out to find an activity that would keep me engaged, and that’s when I discovered lawn bowls. Joining Woodcroft Bowls Club was transformative; from the very first day, I felt a strong connection—not just to the game, but to the camaraderie and vibrant social scene that defined the club. My passion for the club grew, leading me to take on roles like Club Captain, Vice Captain, and even website administrator. In 2024, I was honoured to be elected President, following in the distinguished footsteps of Chris Stickland, who led our club admirably for six years.

Our Historic Club Home

Woodcroft Bowls Club is part of the larger Woodcroft Club community, a historic institution founded in 1913 as the Eltham Conservative Club. Over the years, the Woodcroft Club has evolved, offering amenities that include a well-stocked bar, a cosy darts lounge, outstanding snooker facilities, and a spacious function room for events. This rich history and community spirit make Woodcroft the perfect home for our bowls club.

A Legacy in Lawn Bowling

Our club, initially founded in 1932 as the Eltham Conservative Bowls Club, has been a cornerstone of lawn bowls in South East London and North Kent for over 90 years. In 2013, we transitioned to Woodcroft Bowls Club, coinciding with a significant upgrade to our facilities, including a new green that has earned a reputation as one of the best in North Kent. This top-notch green, meticulously maintained by our dedicated groundsman Paul Seage, is now a preferred venue for county matches and competitions.

A Warm Welcome to All

With excellent facilities and a welcoming atmosphere, our club has continued to attract a growing membership of both male and female players. We host a full calendar of matches for men and women, ranging from friendly games to competitive fixtures at local and county levels. Whether you’re an experienced bowler or new to the game, we invite you to become part of our thriving community.

Note: Membership in the main Woodcroft Club is required to join the bowls club.

Acknowledgements and Appreciation

As we look forward to a new season, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to those who make our club what it is today. Special thanks go to:

• Laurence Rolfe, our Secretary, for his fresh ideas and invaluable leadership, building on the solid foundation laid by his predecessors.

• Ken Bailey, our Fixture Secretary, and Alan Attle, our Team Secretary, for organising a vibrant schedule of matches.

• Paul Seage, whose tireless work ensures that our green remains in pristine condition.

• Our entire Bowls Committee, for planning a season full of competitive and enjoyable bowls.

Most importantly, I thank our members for their enthusiasm, skill, and the wonderful sense of community they bring. I look forward to the season ahead and to many sunny days of bowling together.
